Battlestar Galactica to be Decommissioned

It was the lead story in the Fleet newsletter a month before the Cylon attack. I was actually on leave, sitting in a sidewalk cafe on Picon and sipping my coffee, trying very hard not to look like a soldier on leave. In retrospect, I was doing a horrible job, considering my reading material, but I guess that's not even the littlest bit important now.

1 question.
1 chance.
1 honest answer.

Okay, so I followed the lead of a few folks around and tried out those twenty questions, not realizing just how massive an undertaking it would be, but here it is for anyone curious. Please note that I do get pretty honest and a little blunt, but not personal and not particularly specific.

Twenty Questions

214 - "To be great is to be misunderstood."

The moment that you stand on one side or another of any dispute, you can never be viewed from the middle again. It's a truth that the people of this fleet, and in particular the leaders of this fleet, have learned well. Certainly, we haven't had so many people so vehemently disagreeing over the stances of political and ideological leaders since Tom Zarek.

Zarek himself, though, is an interesting story.

212 - What event do you wish you could have been a "fly on the wall" for?

Kara didn't want to talk about it, not that I had too much of a chance to bring it up afterwards, or really, an inclination to. Dee definitely wasn't about to discuss it and there was no way I was going to broach the subject, not after things seemed to be getting so much better between us.

But it happened. Gods, I made it happen when I ordered Dee to rescue Kara off that rock.

Following a lead here...

With the holiday world slowly returning to whatever semblance of normal it was before, so too is RPing and writing. As I get back into the rhythm of things, just a note about my character(s).

This time around, the [livejournal.com profile] tammy_awards for whatever reason are no longer extending the offer to "opt out" of participation. As that would have been my choice, I'm instead asking anyone who might have been considering nominating this or any of my other pups for an award to instead select another nominee to submit. There are a lot of outstanding muses and writers out there, so by all means recognize them.

(Applies to Lee, [livejournal.com profile] stoic_slim, [livejournal.com profile] knight_flyer and all my other characters.)

Thanks. :)

An excerpt from the cover article of Fleet Family magazine, approximately fifteen years before the Cylon attack.

"It's All About Balance"

Those are the words of Colonel William Adama, when asked how the newly-promoted and newly-assigned Executive Officer of the battlestar Columbia manages to be both a full-time career officer of the Fleet and a husband and father of two energetic boys. It's a particularly apt bit of advice, as Col. Adama was, at the time of the question being asked, making his way across the small pond outside of his Caprica City home, walking from one small and seemingly precarious stepping stone to the next.

Sorry for the lateness, Dad. But hopefully it was a good day.

206 - What do you live for?

I don't know, I guess I'm living for what everybody else in the fleet is: the survival and continuance of the human race.

That's the obvious answer, and the most responsible and moral one, of course. But few people are that noble and selfless and almost none of those are like that every minute of every day. The rest of the time, we're all just human, and so we have our own selfish little personal reasons to live.

203 - Intrigue

It's a matter of public record that Galactica's personnel are constantly drawing and red-drawing star charts and system maps based on the data we discover as the human fleet travels through space. What we're not, though, is explorers. Explorers would be doing a hell of a lot more of what our fleet does only when absolutely necessary: stopping to look around.

We're traveling through space that in all likelihood, no human has traversed in thousands of years, ever since the Thirteenth Tribe departed Kobol; or never, depending on your opinion on that particular story. Either way, under other circumstances every university in the Twelve Colonies would be dying for the opportunity to send out astronomical and archaeological teams to follow in our wake, mining every planet and moon we pass for information.

But there are no more universities, and humanity is on the run, not on an exploratory mission.

That doesn't mean that every now and then, we don't put our feet down on solid ground.

200 - Lyric prompt, "Visions of Johanna", Bob Dylan:

And when bringing her name up
He speaks of a farewell kiss to me
He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all
Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall

[Private]

One thing I'm not supposed to do as an officer, and especially as CAG is show any kind of favoritism to any one or group of my pilots. Of course, there's plenty of reasons to look at the rules a little loosely, under the circumstances of our particular situation, but there are lots of reasons to keep some military discipline, too.

But when something happens that shakes the whole damn ship, is it any wonder that I could cut someone some extra slack?

What about when something happens that tears the hell out of my heart, too?

Denial, anger and depression we got. Can't help you with the rest. )

Regarding the items you forwarded me. I am not sure as I recognize the handcuffs, but I will make sure that they find a good home and are put to good use.

Surprise and thanks go out to whoever thought enough of this prompt response of Lee's to have [livejournal.com profile] you_rock to tell him it rocked! *LOL*

Folkses on Lee's f-list? You maybe should expect a little rocking yourselves. :D

198 - If you could have any mutant/super power, which one would it be, and what would you do with it? (If you already have a mutant or super power, what one would you trade it in for?)

Have you ever spoken to an Oracle?

I'm not talking about those women at street fairs who sit in silk tents full of perfume and incense and offer to read your future for a handful of cubits or reveal your true love for a handful more. I mean a real Oracle.

It's an always strange, often disturbing experience, and not one I care to have more often than I absolutely have to.

197 - Is there anyone in your life who you feel is exceptionally wise? Who, and how did you meet this person?

It's a good question. Do I pick Dr. Baltar, who is far and away the most intelligent and mentally gifted individual in the entire fleet? Or do I look towards someone like Karl Agathon, who despite troubles no one wish on themselves, still manages to make solid decisions as an officer? I could just as easily look toward Doc Cottle, whose advice and warnings are always a good idea to heed, or to, naturally, my father the Admiral, whose strategic and tactical mind have saved our lives more times than I can count.

When I think of "wisdom", though, I think of someone with not only a great deal of smarts, but who's shown they can temper intelligence with compassion and patience, all in the service of humanity and their vision for it: President Laura Roslin.

196 - Congratulations! You've been granted one wish. What is it?

I wish I could speak to my grandfather again, even if it was just for an hour.

After Baltar's trial, I've been pretty damn unsure about nearly everything in my life. I had a little bit of a good laugh at the man's expense in his former cell when he realized that even though he was free, there was now no direction at all for him. Now that things have quieted down somewhat, I've come to discover that I'm not so different.
