162 - I never thought I'd say this, but...
((contains spoilers for ep 3x12))
I think Sam Anders is a good man. And maybe in a different world, we'd be very good friends.
I've always respected the man, even if only in theory. Kara's debrief after returning from Caprica the first time were (all right, I'll admit-- surprisingly) detailed and thorough in documenting Sam's leadership of the resistance and their amazing efforts against the occupying Cylons. As I read through the reports, I was drawn a picture of a capable and charismatic leader, an excellent tactician and an individual with a great amount of potential.
Of course, I didn't read between the lines enough to recognize Kara's feelings for him, but that's another story.
Even after Sam and the remainder of the resistance were rescued and brought back to the fleet, I didn't really get to know him. He was... more than a little preoccupied with his lady, and I can't say that I don't understand that. A separation like that must have been very difficult. I did at least get to append to my assessment of Samuel T. Anders that he was also a good sort of fellow, but far rougher around the edges than I'd previously surmised.
After New Caprica, though, I'll admit that there was some... friction. But after his more-than-commendable deeds on the algae planet, I believe I finally met the man himself. Fiercely committed to his sense of right, he was also able to recognize the value of discipline and the necessities of war and command. I watched him motivate and lead the civilians, and I was telling the gods-honest truth that I believed he would make a fine Colonial officer.
The firefight, though, put any doubts to rest. Sam's a good man, and in a tough spot, I'd trust him with my life. He did good. Real good. I doubt we'll ever be knocking back ambrosia anytime soon, but I can say all that at least.
