TM 184 - Change the World

184 - 'We set out to change the world and ending up… just changing ourselves'

I don't know about you, but when I think of the world changing, I think about the Cylons.

A hundred years from now, assuming that humanity finds a way to stick around that long, I wonder how the story is going to be told. Will they be the kind of monsters that my mother used to tell Zak and me about to scare us into behaving, or will they be a long distant memory, reduced to third- and fourth-hand stories and toothless historical records?

Hopefully, however the history gets written, no one will forget that they changed our world.

It all started out with humanity doing, well, what humans usually do-- trying to make things better for themselves. In this case, the idea that maybe if someone invented machines that could do the repetitive, difficult or physically dangerous work needed by society, then people wouldn't have to. And they figured that the smarter they made these machines, the more and better work that could be done, humanity benefiting every step of the way.

But, we know from history, we got too dependent on the machines, and kept letting them get smarter and smarter. We all know what happened then.

I'm not going to minimize or belittle all the lives lost in the Cylon wars, and I'm not going to call the destruction of the Colonies anything but a massacre. But that's not the point I'm trying to make.

The point is that now, on the other side of it, humanity itself has changed. Not willingly, and for damn sure not by any circumstances we would ever want to live through, but here we are. Humanity is different.

You can see it some when you walk through Galactica's corridors. Military protocol is one thing, but the soldiers on this battlestar, these warriors, they've become something more.

Hell, if you go out into the fleet and pick a ship at random, the freighters and the processing plants, all of them have these new humans everywhere you look.

We're tougher and harder to kill. We're more willing to do what it takes to keep humanity living, whether its dig in and fight tooth and nail or turn tail and run for the hills. There are new rules and everyone is figuring out how to be this new kind of people.

I want to think that if and when we finally find Earth, that somehow, all of this has turned us into a humanity that will be able to hang onto it and make it our new home.

We'll get there first, Apollo.

The Thirteenth Tribe were humans. They left the directions for us. What makes you think they'd have wanted you to get there?

Because we know more about your Sacred Scrolls than you do yourself.

We'll just have to see about that. Last time I checked, we were still in the lead.

I think we're still full of surprises.
