TM 226 - Three Things
226 - Name three things that you're looking forward to in the near future and why.
Newest Quorum Member Hoping to Make a Big Landing
By Reece Bannon, staff writer
The New Colonial Times recently sat down for a few minutes with the newly-appointed Caprican delegate to the Quorum of Twelve, Mr. Lee Adama.
NCT: Thank you for your time, Major Adama--
Adama: Actually, it's just "Mister" Adama now. I resigned my Fleet commission, not even CFR anymore.
NCT: My apologies, Mr. Adama. And was that a difficult decision, leaving the crew of the Galactica?
Adama: It was, yes. Ever since the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, the Fleet and the Galactica have been virtually all I've known, and in many ways have been the rock on which I've built my life. Very nearly everyone I know is still there, including a great many very good and dear friends. But it was time for me, like all of humanity, to allow myself to make the decision that moved me away from what was safe and familiar to what could be much more for the best.
NCT: And that decision led you here, to a seat among the Quorum of Twelve.
Adama: Correct, and let me tell you, Mr. Bannon, I am humbled and honored to be counted among such distinguished citizens, and I can only hope to live up to their example and the expectations of my constituency.
NCT: You're known in the fleet as a man willing to stand up for and, indeed, fight for what you believe is right. Moreover, you're seen as something of a proponent of change and reform when it comes to the system. How do you respond?
Adama: Well, I'd like to think that first impression of myself is taken as a positive. As for the second, I'm not going to sit here and call for the impeachment of the President or the overthrow of the government, far from it. I'm a great admirer of President Roslin and her administration, and I see myself as doing whatever I can to improve the government and allow it to evolve and change the way humanity has.
NCT: So what would you say are things you 'd like to see "evolve and change" about the government? I'm sure we can guess the first...
Adama: Ah, I see you've read the minutes for the last meeting.
NCT: Yes, indeed.
Adama: All right, let's start there, then. I'd like very much to work on-- and better yet, work with the President on-- the reform of the legal system. As President Roslin mentioned, I know very well how badly we need to adjust and reassess our ideas of law and order, now that the circumstances under which humanity lives have been so radically altered. I'd like to see us get to the end result: a fair, balanced and impartial judicial branch as quickly as possible.
Secondly, I'd like to see the citizens of this fleet have more of a voice in the way they're governed. Although the system of election and representation is time-honored and time-tested, it matters to me, and I'm sure to the President and the rest of the Quorum, just what it is that is on the average citizen's mind. I'm looking into the possibility of establishing town hall meetings and increasing the elected representatives' availability to their constituents.
Thirdly, I think after the divisive nature of the Baltar trial and given what seems to be the current climate of the fleet, I think it is imperative that the Executive and Legislative branches of the government restore the peoples' confidence in its government. I know that Laura Roslin and the Quorum are looking out for our best interests, but I sit at the big table. It's time that everyone else knew that, too.
NCT: And I believe that is all our time, Mr. Adama. I thank you very much for your time. Good luck, sir.
Adama: Thank you, Mr. Bannon.
